Chapter 5

Trixie

The next day during lunch, I’m in line at the cafeteria when I overhear two surgical residents talking to each other at a nearby table, their backs to me.

“Dr. Brown said she was out with one of those biker guys. I guess old habits die hard.”

“What do you mean?”

“He knew her grandfather or something. She was apparently some kind of wild child back in the day.” She sniffs. “I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s stealing meds for her boyfriend to sell.”

“I mean seriously,” the other girl scoffs into her salad. “She should have some self-respect. She’s a doctor, for God’s sake.”

The line moves forward, but I don’t go with it. I’m frozen in place, my heart racing at their unkind words. I’ve done nothing these past few years but work my ass off, and still… one date with one guy is going to ruin it.

A man behind me taps me on the shoulder, and I stumble out of line. There’s a bathroom down the hall, and I push inside, relieved to find it empty. I flip the lock on the door behind me and splash cold water on my face, trying to think.

I really like Stone, but he just doesn’t fit into my life anymore, not the life I’ve built for myself. I’ve put my wild days behind me, and there’s a reason for that. Responsible me got through years of med school. Sensible me is the one who’s able to provide for her grandfather. Wild me might have had fun, but she also got into trouble. Right now, I’m not sure I know how to balance all the parts of myself.

If only Stone wasn’t so tempting. When I look at him, I feel like I’ve been starving for years, and only he can satiate my hunger for adventure. My yearning for a life lived outside the box of societal expectations. Is there any world where I can have it all? Where I can be a respected surgeon and Stone’s “old lady?”

Or am I just fooling myself, and destroying everything I’ve worked so hard for in the process?

My pager beeps, summoning me to the ER, and I leave the bathroom determined to have a serious conversation with Stone the next time I see him. I have to break this off before it goes any further.
